Bird Feeding Fundamentals – When Feeding Wild Birds, There Are 4 Keys To a Successful Program

Food

Provide different types of food to attract more variety of birds. Sunflower is a great seed that many species love. Higher quality mixes attract more birds. Keep feeders full so birds will continue to visit.

Feeders

Provide a variety of feeders to attract the greatest variety of birds. Use hoppers and tube feeders for Sunflower and mixes. Use Finch feeders for Nyjer and Finch mixes. Platform feeders will accommodate ground feeding birds.

Water

Provide a shallow water source (2 inch-3 inch deep) so birds can bathe and drink. Water also attracts birds that feeding stations alone cannot, such as ones that feed on insects alone.

Location

Place feeders in locations already frequented by birds. Place by shrubs and/or trees to offer protection.

FAQ’s

Where should I locate my feeder to attract the most birds?

Make sure that your feeder is close to natural shelter such as trees and shrubs to provide protection for your birds, but be careful not to make it too convenient for squirrels. Also, place it in a location so that you can enjoy watching the activities of your feathered friends.

Should I feed the birds year-round?

Yes, birds need food year-round, so it is best to keep bird feeders full all year. Birds have a high metabolism and need to continually eat. Birds nest from late winter through late summer and during these months there is not an abundance of natural foods, so they need additional food for breeding and raising their young.

What is the best bird food?

Oil Sunflower Seed is one of the best seeds to have in a wild bird food mix. It is popular with a large number of species and is easy to feed in a variety of feeder styles. Wagner’s blends provide a wide selection of seed choices that will attract a largest variety of birds to the backyard feeder. Wagner’s has the mixes that will attract the species you want and will fit any budget.

How can I attract specific birds and not attract others (e.g. starlings, grackles and cowbirds)?

Make sure that you have the right bird food to attract specific birds. Sunflower is a great seed that many species love. Also specialty blends, such as Wagner’s Cardinal Blend or Finches Supreme, will attract these specific birds. Birdseed with less milo and corn won’t attract as many cowbirds, grackles and starlings if you would rather not see these birds.

How do I stop squirrels from eating all of my birdseed?

Squirrels are a common problem at bird feeders. There are now a number of feeder styles designed to prevent squirrels from reaching the seed. Additionally, there are two seeds that squirrels do not like — safflower and nyjer seed. An optional method is to supply the squirrels with their own supply of food away from the bird feeder area. Cracked corn works nicely.

Where and how should I store my bird seed after I bring it home?

Store your bird seed elevated on a shelf in a cool, dry location. Make sure that it is closed or sealed tightly in original package or in a storage container. It is important that the storage location has good air circulation and is away from direct sunlight or heat source. You should avoid storing your bird seed on a cement floor, since moisture from the floor can be transferred to the seed.

This is the best bird seed I’ve found for the Goldfinches I feed here in Washington State. I live in the Pacific Northwest on an island and choose to feed only the goldfinch. Due to a squirrel problem developing and a problem with mosquitos I am unable to provide water which upsets me. However I have noticed that the birds collect the water off the grass and leaves. This seed is of superb quality and our goldfinches go bonkers for it. They like to line up on the fence waiting while I refill the two feeders I provide. They are very beautiful. Thank you for a great quality product without a lot of filler chaff. You get more seed with this brand and not a bunch of non edible chaff or twigs as filler. Some other brands I have four f that the seed is cheapened and lotsa chaff. Not with Wagner’s!!

Nyjer seems to always be more expensive than the others; yet, I love seeing the tiny birds on the feeders all day as well as Cardinals although I do have a variety of bird food for the larger birds. Bottom line: the birds love this type and brand.Mother asked my Dad to build a birdfeeder years ago which was a funny 2 year project starting off looking like Snoopy’s Dog house on a tall piling – pillar. He filled it every day when he came back from his office.Having lost both my parents recently, I tried to feed the birds in their memory in Ohio; yet, the deer ate it all, so again, I tried in South Carolina. Like Daddy, I went overboard, but not building; rather, I purchased SEVERAL feeders from Amazon which are GREAT, and I just love seeing the birds all day.

We have ordered the 10 pound bag about every two months, for about 3 years, since it is such a great product. We have a flock of 2-6 red finches, a flock of 10-14 yellow/green finches and 4 doves that LOVE this food! They are around our house all year round when the food is out. The red and yellow/green finches share the food and 2-6 birds are usually on our small feeders at any given time. We also have 4 doves that hang out all year below the feeders to eat the seeds that falls to the ground. We feel so great feeding the birds and they give us so much joy with their liveliness, singing and making their home in our yard.MichaelMichael Deane Houghton

I personally don’t care for the taste, but the birds seem to like it. It attracts small birds, and the jays don’t seem to know what the little birds are raving about. Because it’s not mixed with the cheap stuff, the birds take longer to go through it (versus pulling out and dropping the cheap stuff to get to the tasty stuff). The seed is shiny, so I imagine it’s oily and nutritious. Some birds fly to the feeder for a seed and then back to a branch to crack it open. Others sit on the feeder and eat continuously.Oh, and the squirrels (ubiquitously named Fred) don’t get anything out of this. I don’t think they can eat it.

I was going to wait to write a review until I could put up a photo (I love reviews with photos) but I just couldn’t wait – and there are tons of American Goldfinches and Pine Siskens on my feedersBuying seed online is always nerve wracking- you never know what you’re gonna get, and this is especially true with nyjer thistle seed because it dries out easily and if it’s stale, birds won’t eat it. If you can actually see the seed in the bag you’re purchasing, it’ll appear brownish and dry if it’s old. So yeah, buying a $35 lb bag of bird seed sight-unseen is always a crap shootFirst i must mention that this bag is huge!( I’m used to the 5 lb size). This is a LOT of seed. Also, I did see this same bag in our local store and it was $15 more.Oh man I was so happy when I opened the bag. (don’t judge me! I’m an old lady – we like birds – haha) These Seeds are deep black and shiny – perfect!I have 10 different kinds of bird feeders up, 3 of which are hulled sunflower seed – a crowd favorite) but after filling my thistle feeders up I’ve noticed the finches are actually often all over these instead of the sunflower. This is a first.I highly recommend this seed from this seller. I couldn’t be more pleased. (Fyi, I bought this seed in May 2022. )

I love that a packaging company has finally come out with a velcro-type re-sealable bad (instead of the three rigid tracks most baggies have). This works fabulous. Easy to open and close. The seed inside was very very fresh. In fact, I already ordered more because the 50+ goldfinches devoured it in not much more than a week. They love it! So do I!. (so much better than the older likely stale stuff I get from the big DIY stores).

The Gold Finches go crazy over this seed in our backyard feeder. The seed is very fine, and a lot of it spills out of the feeder even though the feeder was made specifically for this type of seed. The finches will ground feed on the spilled Nyger, though I prefer to keep them feeding up high to avoid the local cats. The seed smells fresh when it comes and seems to be pretty pure with few sticks or other materials that I hear folks find in other brands.I like this size of bag too so it turns over fast enough to give me confidence that the seed is reasonably fresh. I go through a bag about every 4-6 weeks, faster in the summer when the birds are more active.

I learned that you really have to be patient when putting out food to attract new birds to your garden. I’d never even seen a finch in my SoCal neighborhood, so was a little unsure about putting out a feeder full of nyjer seed, but I wanted to at least try.It took about a week or so to attract finches to my yard and wow! Once the chirped word was out, I had flocks of goldfinches and red finches that were all about this stuff. I started out with a 5 lb bag and then had to buy a 20 lb because this food was so LOVED by my new little finch friends. It’s also very reasonably priced compared to the grain store. The nyjer seeds are fresh and look a little oily (which is good). The nyjer seeds are tiny, little slivers. Almost like fennel seeds. Would and will buy again! My only regret is that I didn’t buy a larger feeder, because the finches go through about two to three cups of the nyjer seed a day.

This is a really fine quality nyjer seed and it’s offered at this really great price. I go through a lot of it since I have tons of gold- and purple-finches. Chickadees and sparrows also love it. I also really appreciate the bag which you don’t have to cut open; it has an easy-lock system that you pull open and then re-close by zipping it. Such a great extra feature as is the chart on the back of the bag that shows which birds prefer which type of seeds. For an amateur birder like me, this is really helpful.

Finches – purple, house, gold, plus chickadees LOVE this. Squirrels, crows, etc. do NOT. What more can I say. It’s going into autumn now … crazy birds are eating 2, 6 post tube feeders in less than a week. We do mix it, half and half with safflower seeds. Takes the birds a bit to get used to it. We’re in the southeast US and this it what the birds that usually come here need. Once they get used to it, they LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. We’re also near an area returning to the natural marsh lands so we do get some interesting birds on migration. We have another very large tube feeder with only black oil sunflower seeds the birds so through once or twice a week. We’re getting cardinals and blue birds (meal worms). Mourning doves. Robins, occasionally, when it’s colder here. I know this is a more expensive food but it is well worth it if you enjoy watching the birds.
