A ThunderShirt History Lesson

Our Brand Story

It all started with a dog named Dosi over ten years ago! Dosi was terrified of thunderstorms and fireworks, and her family wanted to help. Fast forward a few months, and they had created the ThunderShirt. The idea is similar to swaddling an infant, and provides gentle, comforting pressure around a dog’s torso.

While Dosi normally paced, panted, and barked during thunder, with a ThunderShirt, she laid down almost instantly, and was much calmer for the duration of any storms. Now ThunderShirts are helping millions of dogs around the world!

ummm….Right? A thundershirt? Give me a break. This is not going to help me. I was so wrong!!!! Both Ronan and myself are getting a full nights sleep now during rain, wind, thunder, and lightening storms!!! This is the BEST product ever!!! Being a skeptic, I followed the directions EXACTLY, meaning, please have your “grandpa scare-de-kat DOG” wear this when they are calm FIRST, with no storm, to promote positive anti-anxiety behavior!!! Also, to note, you get 45 days to return the product, which is such a nice gesture. However, let me tell you what happened to Ronan. I applied the ThunderShirt and he just stared at me, but smiled (see smiling photo). He then laid down and slept soundly. What? No way? Are you kidding me? I then applied Thundershirt again one hour before a predicted storm and he laid down again and slept in a coma!!!! Again, I wish I could give this product 20 Stars, I’m so happy. Since Ronan was on the cusp of 2 different sizes, I ordered up to XL, however I wish I would have ordered L instead bc a little to long for him. But that’s okay, I’m so stinking HAPPY !!! Tshirt washes and goes straight into the dryer, not one issue. LOVE LOVE LOVE !!!! A MUST BUY!!!!

First of my dog is scared of fireworks, thunderstorms, wind, fast movements, her shadow, the color blue, mouse farts and floating leafs. She is so messed up, shaking, running off to hide(and pee), tearing up blankets, the packing and just keeping us up all nigh.We found this product and read the reviews and had to try it. Now out dog is scared of everything so getting this on her for the first time took a lot of patients, a curse word or twelve, and a few beers. Once in her she mellowed right out. She not mind it at all. Never once tried to get it off.Luck be hold that night we had a storm. She did great. She was a little anxious but not shaking or destroying the house. It’s not a complete fix but helps with our dogs crazy.Worth a try.

I’ve had the jacket for three days now, and I’ve waited to write my review to see if it really works. We recently adopted a seven-month-old terror, I mean terrier. If you know anything about terriers, they can be, well, terrors. He was nuts but also seems to exhibit a lot of anxiety. All evening he will pant and pace, pant and pace, nonstop. It drives you up a wall. Then, the other parts of the day, he would run around like a madman. I understand that a lot of it is just being a puppy, but we were going crazy.I then remembered about this jacket, so I thought I would give it a try… I had zero expectations, seeing that it seems to work, or it doesn’t – no real in-between.When we received it, I couldn’t get it on him fast enough. Putting it on the first couple of times takes an engineering degree, but then you get the hang of it, and it isn’t that big of a deal. At first, my dog was a little wary about the jacket on him… He kept trying to bite and chew it. But eventually, he got used to it. Then the magic happened about an hour, or so, later: he LAYED DOWN and went to sleep. Our jaws dropped. He is getting more and more used to it (putting it on, taking it off, etc.) as time goes on, and we are finally getting some peace.I have to say the only tiny thing about it is that the velcro scares him when taking off the jacket. I know he will probably get used to it with time, but I just wanted to mention that to people.Overall, it’s a life-saver.

My 7 yr old Lab has major anxiety issues when it comes to getting in the car, riding in the car, going to the vet, the gardeners, the pool guy, bicycles, skateboards, and anyone walking by our house, but could care less about fireworks and thunderstorms..My solution to her issue with the gardeners is to do laundry and run the stove fan simultaneously when they come on Monday to drown out the noises. Also to never be gone on Monday afternoon when they come, in case she breaks the glass window by jumping against it. Seems ridiculous but it’s amazing what one is willing to put up with and to what extremes one will go! I’d heard of the Thundershirt but thought it was for really hyper dogs. Surely she would grow out of these behaviors and be a laid back dog like a Lab is supposed to be…lol.. After my last trip to the vet where she trembled so badly and they had to actually slide her along the floor to get her in, I decided I would try this shirt, mainly because I didn’t want to drug her, and I hated to see her so stressed. The shirt came today and the gardeners were due shortly. I thought , I need to acclimate her to the shirt before having a real life situation..so I put it on her thinking she would try to take it off.. Hmmm, she tolerated it. The she stood calmly by my side..we went outside and she lay by my feet and fell asleep. Hmm! Good start I thought. I removed it. About 30 min later the gardeners arrived and she began barking and growling. I put the shirt back on and she settled right down. Instead of lunging at the window, slobbering all over and barking, she calming lay at my feet, only softly growling. Could this be? Could it be this easy? So it seems..the real test will be next week when I take her to the vet. But my initial reaction is “Wow, this is amazing,” Why did I wait so long…? It’s a miracle…stay tuned for the vet visit..

OMG this piece of cloth was of God send for my rescue. She had been surrendered to the shelter several times in a very short period of time because she was a monster when left alone. Long story short, she does not like to be left alone, she gets anxious & destructive (she destroyed 3 crates with us!) when she’s alone for too long. After working with her then adding the thundershirt she became a completely different dog. I don’t know what this magical shirt is all about, but it worked for my girl!!! We use it during storms, (she absolutely hates thunder) fireworks, when we visit grandma, and when we’re going to be out of the house for more than a few hours. It almost INSTANTLY calms her. It’s a miracle in a box!!Scarlett is a boxer/pit mix, 65lbs and the size large shirt fits her perfectly.I can’t say enough about this product. It literally saved us & her!!!! Well worth the cost!

Love the thundershirt. There is a very obvious difference in our pup when it’s on. He’s more relaxed, less pacing. We seeked out a rescue pit bull and he would become very stressed when I left the house as well as pacing around. This was still during our “trial run” and he was not bonded to us quite yet. We wanted to make it work with him so we bought the thundershirt and calming treats. Prior to shirt he broke out of crate several times, destroyed our window blinds and would cry. Post shirt he relaxes most times except when it’s play time and work time (walking). He’s bonded to us now and he’s doing great. When he’s not wearing it he seems a little more anxious. He likes the shirt as he stands still waiting for me to Velcro him in. We take it off every day for awhile so his coat can breath.I’ll be purchasing a second so we can rotate to wash regularly. Plus I think he’ll look good in teal green :)Bonus feature is they make him appear might more approachable. His ears were “cropped” (poorly, with scissors) and he’s very large with a big block white head. The thundershirt makes him look as friendly and sweet as he is.

I recently adopted a second dog, and he came with lots of baggage. Separation anxiety, leash reactivity, and lack of proper socialization – so every experience is scary new thing! I’d heard about the thundershirt, but didn’t need anything like it for my first dog, who is the most chill dog on the planet. My first dog has been helping my new dog a lot with socialization, and by showing him things are fun, not scary – but I knew we needed more. I have worked with kids on the ASD spectrum, so I get how this works – pressure and weight are very calming, as they counteract over-stimulation.I was surprised that this was just a thin piece of cloth, I expected it to be more of a weighted vest, especially considering the rave reviews. If I would have read anything or looked at any of the pictures, I would have known what I was getting, ha – but after a particularly stressful long car ride, I just clicked “BUY”!! However, this has definitely lived up to expectations and reviews. My new pup calmed down as soon as I put this on. We worked with it around the house for a while and on some walks around the neighborhood to adjust him to wearing it, and then he wore it when I left the house. I have doggie-cams so I could keep an eye on him. Instead of crying, barking, and throwing himself at the door, followed by pacing in front of the door for most of the day – at first he would sit quietly in front of the door, then go join my other dog for naps and neighbor watching. (Side note – get a doggie cam, the motion alerts are hilarious!!! I always get them when the dogs are stretching in the middle of the floor – what a life!!)We have also used the vest under his harness when going to the dog park – getting into the dog park is a nightmare, as my new dog loses his little puppy brain when he is walking on a leash and meets another dog. He turns into the most vicious sounding animal you will ever hear, but if he actually makes it to the other dog, he’ll just shove his entire head in their butt so he can get a good sniff in. But with the thundershirt, while he isn’t perfectly behaved, he is much more calm – no more barking or lunging, just whining and pacing.

I rescued a dog a few months ago. 12 yr old deaf pit mix with severe separation anxiety. And i mean severe. Self injury, trying to escape, non stop barking (sorry neighbors), peeing himself. Im an animal professional, so to say i could not find a solution was very self defeating.I tried stuffed kongs, walks beforehand, the whole slow conditioning system, crating, not crating, doggie door, cbd oil, got a second dog for him, prozac, piles of enrichment, lavendar, on and on.I finally got him to moderate anxiety with walk first, then confining him and his side chic to living room with everything shut (curtains, doors, etc), frozen stuffed kongs, male wrap, and racing home everyday on my half hour lunch to give him a potty break (this sucks so bad, but necessary). As a last ditch effort to get him to at least mild, i ordered a thundershirt. Honestly didnt think it would work at all. Very wrong. It was the final piece of the puzzle and i have a legit calm dog (i watch him on cam when im gone). Today was the first time he didnt pee in his diaper and i have high hopes of being able to phase that out. Hes still fragile, but i have seen such a dramatic change in his demeanor, i teally believe we can kick this whole anxiety thing. He was on the cusp of large/xl. I went with large and it fits perfectly.Could not be happier.

I read all the reviews and I have to say, I was a little dubious. There were SO MANY people who talked about how miraculous it was with their anxious dog but I just needed to see it for myself. My dog was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and her triggers are visual: mailmen, stray cats, dogs outside going on a walk, etc.Oh. Em. Jee.It really works! I could not believe it! Not only that, but my dog gets SO EXCITED when it’s time to put it on! Her tail literally goes a mile a minute the moment I pull it out. It makes her happier than just about any toy or snackie! Now, I would not necessarily recommend this as the SOLE source of support for an anxious dog. It’s definitely a tool to be used with all the other tools/strategies/behavior modifications. But when my dog is triggered, if she’s not wearing the vest, it will take her anxiety attack down to zero in record time as soon as I put it on. And if she’s wearing it while triggered…let me put it to you this way. The mailman just came to the door…and she didn’t react. It’s not always 100%, sometimes she will still have an anxiety attack while wearing it but it is SUBSTANTIALLY LESS in time that it takes her to recover. So happy, I have no complaints! Whoever invented this is a genius!
